Museums in Trondheim cover quite a diverse selection of different topics, so it is quite likely that you will find something of interest. Featuring a huge collection of musical instruments, many of which are extremely rare and unusual, the Ringve Museum of Music History is always popular with visitors to Trondheim.
The Folk Museum is also popular and much of this attraction is open-air, standing next to the remains of King Sverre's Castle. Containing one of the biggest collections of public art in the whole of Norway, the Trondheim Art Museum is one not to miss. Notable artists exhibited here include August Cappelen, Hakon Bleken, Inger Sitter and also Jakob Weideman.

Located on the western side of central Trondheim, the Sverresborg Trondelag Folkemuseum is one of the city's best museums and showcases an array of well-displayed artefacts. The 'Livsbilder' exhibit is especially interesting and is better known to many as the 'Images of Life' exhibition, housed within a recently completed extension. Onsite at the Folk Museum is a good cafe, whilst next-door you will also find a popular 18th-century tavern, serving reasonably priced food.

The Ringve Museum of Music History is located within the historical 18th-century estate of local Russian Ringve Gard, and is surrounded by some rather beautiful botanical gardens. Ringve Gard avidly collected musical instruments of all description and from all over the world. Join a guided tour (in English) to see some of the musical instruments actually being played.

Housing a large collection of Norwegian and Danish paintings from the very start of the 19th century onwards, this gallery also features a series of important lithographs by the country's symbolist artist, Edvard Munch (1863 - 1944). Free guided tours take place each Sunday afternoon, at 13:00. The Trondheim Art Museum is close to the Nidaros Cathedral and as well as many Scandinavian pieces, showcases a host of international art works, all of which are housed is a simple red-brick building built in the early 1930s.

Managed by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, the Trondheim Museum of Natural History and Archaeology contains a large and interesting collection relating to various aspects of natural history and local culture. Within the archaeological section you will encounter ancient finds from as far back as the stone age. There are also many noteworthy Viking treasures and information about the city's development during the Middle Ages.

Something for all the family, the Trondheim Science Museum is known locally as the Vitensenteret and is filled with fun and well-thought out interactive displays. Located in the city centre and within the historic building once owned by the Norges Bank, the Science Centre allows you to conduct your very own experiments, play with some detailed models, have a go at constructing games, and generally have some fun.
