Located on the northern coastline of Norway and within the county of Sor-Trondelag, Trondheim is a large and prominent city. Around 165,000 Norwegians currently call Trondheim their home, making this the third biggest of all Norway's cities and municipalities.

Trondheim was officially established just over 1,000 years ago, although this part of Norway has in actual fact been settled for literally thousands of years. Located at the confluence of the Trondheimsfjord inlet from the Norwegian Sea and the Nidelva River, Trondheim comprises a diverse landscape, with many heavily built-up areas and even features a number of wetland habitats.

Trondheim Maps: Orientation of the City - Trondheim, Norway, NO
The very heart of Trondheim occupies a fairly triangular peninsula space, edged on the eastern and southern sides by the Nidelva, while the Trondheimsfjord lies to the north. The boat quay, railway station and bus terminal (Sentralstasjon) are to be found across the canal are on the northern side of central Trondheim.

The busy square known as either the 'Torvet' or 'Torget' is central to life in Trondheim. To the east, the historic Bakklandet neighbourhood can be reached by the Old Town Bridge (Gamle Bybro). The city's tourist office provides a free guide to Trondheim, which features a good map of the city and is usually perfectly adequate for most. However, if you require a more detailed map, then the public transportation map from the bus terminal may prove suitable.
